about the beginners' lessons on thursdays near waterloo and london bridge

Our Thursday classes will be relocated from January to an exciting new health club neighbouring Tate Modern, just half way between the Waterloo and London Bridge stations. We hope that newcomers to Capoeira will enjoy the classes in this new facilities.

Starting with the warm up, ginga (basic step) and basic kicks, we will move on to practising the movements in pairs, along the studio and in the roda.

The course syllabus includes kicks, esquivas (evasive movements), introduction to acrobatics, such as aus (cartwheels), chapeu de coro or macaco (monkey jump), balancing, preparing you for the bananeira (Capoeira handstand), as well as exercises preparing your body for the training and the game, such as ponte (bridge), rolling, stretching and conditioning.

Music is a very important part of the training. You will learn to play basic traditional Brazilian instruments, such as agô-gô and reco-reco and to sing some Capoeira chulas and corridos (songs). With this, you will also touch on Brazilian Portuguese language.

When you train Capoeira, you not only learn the art form. Your body and mind will get stronger and your stamina will significantly improve. You will be more flexible, agile, stretched, coordinated, calm and generally you will feel good. Associação de Capoeira Senzala de Santos style is very playful and smile is always present on our faces.

Focus during the course is on beginners, but the classes are open to our members, so throughout your training you will also see our regular students training according to their level. We will all make you very welcome and soon you will feel like a part of our group.

If you enrol on your second beginners’ course, you will continue with what you have been learning, practising the basics and moving on to more advanced movements and sequences.
